How Is Coal Based Granular Activated Carbon Manufactured?

26 Oct , 2026

Raw Coal Selection and Preparation:

The manufacturing process of coal based granular activated carbon begins with the selection of suitable coal materials. Coal type and quality can affect the final product’s pore structure, hardness, ash content, and adsorption performance. The selected coal is processed through crushing and screening to prepare it for subsequent production stages.

Carbonization Process:

Carbonization is an important step in activated carbon manufacturing. The prepared coal is heated under controlled conditions with limited oxygen to remove volatile components and form a carbon-rich material. The carbonization temperature and processing conditions influence the structure and properties of the resulting carbon material.

Activation Process:

Activation develops the porous structure that gives activated carbon its adsorption properties. In physical activation, the carbonized material is treated with steam or other suitable activating gases at elevated temperatures. This process creates and enlarges pores, increasing the available surface area for adsorbing impurities from water, air, and industrial gases.

Crushing, Screening, and Particle Size Control:

After activation, the material is processed and screened to obtain the required granular sizes. Common mesh sizes include 4×8, 4×10, 6×12, 8×16, 8×30, and 12×40 mesh. Different particle sizes are selected according to application requirements, equipment design, pressure drop, and contact time.

Quality Testing and Performance Evaluation:

Quality control helps ensure that coal based granular activated carbon meets the required technical specifications. Common tests include iodine value, hardness, moisture content, ash content, particle size distribution, and bulk density. Depending on the intended application, additional adsorption or performance tests may be necessary to evaluate suitability for industrial wastewater treatment, gas purification, and other processes.

Packaging and Delivery:

Once the product passes the required inspections, it is packaged according to customer requirements. Common packaging options include 25 kg bags, jumbo bags, and customized packaging. Proper storage and transportation help protect the activated carbon from moisture, contamination, and physical damage before it reaches the customer.
