Activated Carbon Gas Purification: Scientific Principles and Precise Application

25 Mar , 2026

The Core of Activated Carbon Gas Purification: Strong Physical and Chemical Adsorption

The purifying power of activated carbon stems from its unique internal structure. Imagine that after the internal pore structure of a small piece of high-quality activated carbon is expanded, its surface area may be comparable to the size of a football field (the specific surface area is usually as high as 1000–1500 square meters per gram). This well-developed pore network, especially the rich micropores, constitutes a huge “molecular trap.”

When gas containing impurities (whether it is VOCs, volatile organic compounds, foul-smelling gases, hydrogen sulfide, solvent vapor, or other harmful substances) passes through the activated carbon bed, the gas molecules collide with the enormous inner surface of the activated carbon during movement. At this time, the powerful van der Waals force (physical adsorption) will firmly “grasp” most molecules and bind them to the inner wall of the pore channel. For some specific harmful gases (such as acid gases, mercury vapor, etc.), activated carbon can also undergo chemical reactions (chemical adsorption) with specially loaded chemicals on the surface to transform or fix them. This process efficiently separates and removes target pollutants, delivering clean gas.

Tailor-Made: Choose the Types of Activated Carbon for Different Gases Activated carbon is not a one-size-fits-all solution. According to different gas compositions, concentration, humidity, temperature, and purification requirements, different types of activated carbon need to be selected to achieve the best results.

Coal-Based Granular/Columnar Activated Carbon Features: High-quality anthracite coal is used as raw material, with high mechanical strength, good wear resistance, large adsorption capacity, and a well-developed microporous structure.

Good at purifying: Benzene, toluene, xylene, and other benzene series, non-polar or weakly polar small-molecule organic gases, and some solvent vapors. It is one of the most commonly used and economical varieties for industrial VOC governance.

Wood-Based/Coconut Shell Granular/Columnar Activated Carbon Features: Made from biomass raw materials such as wood or coconut shell, with low ash content, few impurities, well-developed pores (the proportion of mesopores is relatively high), and a fast adsorption rate.

Good at purifying: Organic gases with slightly larger molecular weights (such as ketones and esters), some chlorine-containing organic compounds, complex mixed organic waste gases, and certain special odors. It is especially suitable for applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries where high purity is required.

Honeycomb Activated Carbon

Features: Powdered activated carbon is combined with a special adhesive to form a honeycomb-like regular structure. The biggest advantage is that the airflow resistance is extremely low (small pressure drop).

Good at purifying: Large air volume, medium-to-low concentrations of VOCs, and odor gases. It is widely used in large-scale exhaust gas treatment systems in coating, printing, electronics, furniture, and other industries, offering significant energy-saving benefits.

Special Impregnated Activated Carbon Features: Specific chemicals (such as potassium permanganate, potassium iodide, copper oxide, zinc oxide, sodium hydroxide, phosphoric acid, etc.) are loaded onto the surface of activated carbon (granular or honeycomb) through a special process.

Good at purifying: Through chemical adsorption or catalysis, it specializes in removing specific gases that are difficult to handle by physical adsorption:

Alkaline-impregnated carbon: Efficiently removes acidic, sulfur-containing, and foul-smelling gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and thiols.

Acid-impregnated carbon: Effectively removes alkaline and foul-smelling gases such as ammonia (NH₃) and amines.

Heavy metal adsorption carbon (such as iodized or sulfurized carbon): Strong capture of mercury vapor (Hg), hydrogen arsenide (AsH₃), and other heavy metal vapors.

Catalytic impregnated carbon: Promotes the oxidative decomposition or transformation of certain organic compounds.

Activated Carbon for Solvent Recovery

Features: High-quality coal-based or wood-based granular carbon with a specific pore size distribution is typically selected, offering extremely high adsorption capacity and excellent desorption properties.

Application: Specially used to adsorb and recover valuable organic solvents such as acetone, ethanol, toluene, trichloroethylene, gasoline, etc., enabling resource recycling and reducing operating costs.
